Is your city on this list? How advanced is the economy around you?

The possible locations for the next on-site RPA training class.I set out down the RPA journey a bit naively, with the wrong mindset.

RPA really seemed to offer the same as outsourcing, but using bots instead of offshore workers.

My going-in mentality was around cost savings, cutting headcount, and maybe improving service.

So, using some exciting technology wrapped in a negative/defensive theme.

Fast forward a few years and here’s what I see…

The use of RPA is a major sign of a healthy economy.

By healthy, I mean low unemployment, high workforce participation, and growing labour shortages.

And RPA is a leading indicator of the economies that will thrive in the coming 10-15 years.

Take a look at our list.

The common themes are multiple years of consistent growth. Not necessarily extreme growth (India excluded), but consistent 2+% annual GDP growth for 5+ years. And, as a result, low unemployment. Further, as with much of the economies, limited wage inflation.

With this in mind, it should be a badge of honour to have a city that is an advanced user of RPA.

Remember RPA is almost entry-point digital transformation.

In many ways RPA is just clearing up the legacy mess that we created for ourselves over decades of acquisitions, mergers, gazillions of technology platforms, old products, new products, etc.

The cities that are adopting RPA now will be the ones that move fastest towards meaningful, wholesale use of Ai.

By adopting RPA they are establishing everything that will propel them forward – the skills, the mentality, the culture and the initial technologies.

My key conclusion: RPA is a positive indicator. It is not about replacing jobs. It is not about people becoming too expensive. It is about getting work done in economies where people have workplace choices.

Our list is pulled from all of our Google Analytics. It is never going to be a full global analysis, but it is certainly indicative.

Some cities appear because they are big to start off with.

But if that was the case then other cities would appear way higher up.

Other cities are surprisingly small but appear much higher than their size would suggest.

Take a look and see where your city comes.

Then let’s meet back here in 10 years and see which cities were the fastest adopters of AI, with all the advantages that will drive.

Regards,
Edward
